Understanding Spine Pain

By Nadeem Ahsan, MD

As a pain management specialist at Relievus, I see patients every day who are struggling with spine pain. My goal is to help them understand the causes of their pain and provide the most effective treatments available so they can regain their quality of life. Here, I want to share some insights about spine pain, from its common causes to the advanced treatments we offer at Relievus.

Common Causes of Spine Pain

In my practice, spine pain stems from a variety of issues, ranging from everyday strain to more complex conditions. Some of the most common causes I encounter include:

  • Muscle or ligament strain from heavy lifting or awkward movements.
  • Herniated or bulging discs, which press on nerves and cause significant discomfort.
  • Degenerative disc disease and osteoarthritis, which are age-related conditions that wear down cartilage and discs over time.
  • Spinal stenosis, the narrowing of the spinal canal that puts pressure on nerves.
  • Sciatica, a condition caused by compression of the sciatic nerve, often resulting in pain that radiates down the legs.

Each patient’s spine pain is unique, which is why an accurate diagnosis is essential to determining the best course of treatment.

Recognizing Serious Symptoms

While many people experience occasional back pain, it’s important to recognize when the pain might signal something more serious. If you’re dealing with symptoms like persistent pain lasting more than a few weeks, pain that radiates down your legs or arms, or numbness and weakness, these could indicate nerve involvement or other significant conditions.

Additionally, symptoms such as loss of bladder or bowel control, fever with back pain, or unexplained weight loss could suggest an urgent medical issue. These symptoms shouldn’t be ignored—early diagnosis and treatment can make a significant difference in outcomes.

Tips for Preventing Spine Pain

Preventing spine pain starts with making small, consistent changes to your daily habits. For those who sit for long periods, I recommend maintaining good posture by sitting with your back straight and your feet flat on the floor. Regular breaks to stand, stretch, and move around can also help prevent stiffness and strain.

If your job involves heavy lifting, remember to lift with your knees, not your back, and avoid twisting while holding heavy objects. Strengthening your core muscles through exercises like planks and bridges can provide additional support to your spine and reduce your risk of injury.

Treatment Options at Relievus

At Relievus, we offer a wide range of treatments tailored to each patient’s needs. For many, interventional procedures like epidural steroid injections and nerve blocks can reduce inflammation and provide significant relief. For those dealing with chronic conditions, treatments like spinal cord stimulation (SCS) and radiofrequency ablation can effectively target and manage pain.

I’m particularly excited about the innovative therapies we now offer, such as closed-loop SCS, which adjusts in real-time to a patient’s body responses, and ReActiv8, a targeted therapy for patients with chronic low back pain related to multifidus muscle dysfunction. These advancements are changing the way we approach spine pain and are providing hope for patients who may not have found relief with traditional methods.
